As of July 2025, significant changes in legislation will impact the use of AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) fire extinguishers in the UK. At Bryland Fire Protection, we made the decision to cease the supply of all new extinguishers containing fluorine, including AFFF, water additive, and wet chemical models from January 2025. This decision aligns with imminent legislative changes prohibiting the manufacture of fluorine in firefighting foams.
Since July 2020, restrictions on fluorinated firefighting foams have been enforced under UK law, with further stringent measures anticipated later this year. As a result, many manufacturers have already ceased the production of AFFF extinguishers, with remaining stocks expected to run out imminently.
What Are the Alternatives to AFFF Extinguishers?
While AFFF extinguishers have been a staple in fire safety for decades, several environmentally friendly and effective alternatives are now available. Depending on the specific fire risks present, these options include:
- Water Extinguishers: Ideal for Class A risks (such as in offices, warehouses, and public buildings) where flammable liquids are not present. These extinguishers provide a straightforward, fluorine-free solution.
- CO2 Extinguishers: Suitable for Class B risks (flammable liquids) and often already present in fire points where AFFF was used.
- Dry Powder Extinguishers: These can address higher Class B risks, depending on the location and fire safety requirements.
- Fluorine-Free Foam Extinguishers: These products replace AFFF extinguishers on a like-for-like basis, providing effective fire suppression.
- Water Mist Extinguishers: Recommended for F Class risks (cooking oils) and other specialised scenarios. These extinguishers are fluorine-free and versatile.
What Should You Do If You Have AFFF Extinguishers?
If your premises currently use AFFF extinguishers, it is essential to plan for their replacement. Under British Standard BS 5306, all portable extinguishers must undergo regular maintenance, including an “extended service” every five years. For AFFF extinguishers, this process involves discharging and refilling – a procedure that will no longer be viable under the new regulations.
When AFFF extinguishers are due for servicing or replacement, our BAFE-qualified engineers will recommend environmentally friendly alternatives tailored to your specific fire risks. Upon replacement, the AFFF extinguishers will be removed and disposed of through certified waste management channels, ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
